The School Environmental Club is committed to promoting environmental awareness through meaningful activities like tree planting. Trees offer numerous benefits such as improving air quality, supporting biodiversity, and combating climate change. Through active participation, students learn to value the natural environment and understand their role in protecting it. Our mission is to empower young people to become responsible stewards of the Earth.
At the SOS Children’s Village in the Hilwaa district of Mogadishu, we organized a large-scale tree-planting initiative aimed at fostering environmental stewardship. The event began with a school-wide assembly that emphasized the importance of environmental care and climate action. Students were encouraged to participate in the global movement towards a healthier planet and to see themselves as change-makers within their own communities As part of the initiative, secondary school students were motivated to dedicate one day each week to discuss environmental and climate change issues. This effort helped foster critical thinking, a deeper understanding of global environmental challenges, and a culture of environmental responsibility. Through weekly discussions, students were able to exchange ideas, propose solutions, and increase their engagement with sustainability topics
During the main event, over 700 students from primary, middle, and secondary classes came together to plant a total of 300 trees. Of these, 250 were fruit-bearing trees and 50 were non-fruit-bearing shed tree varieties. This hands-on experience not only taught students essential planting skills but also emphasized the importance of biodiversity and the positive impact individuals can have on their environment. It was an opportunity to blend practical action with learning.
Working together, the students learned valuable lessons about teamwork, leadership, and environmental responsibility. They experienced firsthand the satisfaction of contributing to a greener future. The success of this event demonstrated the power of collective action and reinforced the idea that protecting the environment starts with small, local efforts. Through initiatives like these, the School Environmental Club continues to inspire and nurture a generation of environmental advocates
