On June 7th, our team took part in a significant beach clean-up at Liido beach, one day before World Ocean Day on 8th June 2024. SWECC’S Partnership with Olalaha Xeebta Liido, this initiative aimed to raise awareness about the urgent issue of plastic waste in our oceans and inspire local communities to take action. This event marks weekly clean-up on Friday, encouraging community involvement and strengthening our commitment to safeguarding the marine environment.
It was energetic as volunteers gathered early in the morning, eager to make a difference. Armed with gloves and trash bags, participants included families, students, and environmental enthusiasts, all united by a common goal: to protect our precious marine environment. As we began our work, conversations flowed among participants about the alarming effects of plastic pollution. Many of the volunteers shared personal stories about their experiences with litter on beaches and its impact on wildlife. It was heartening to see children actively involved, learning the importance of keeping our beaches clean while having fun.
we collected different kinds of wastes like plastic bottles, food wrappers, and other debris that had washed ashore. Each piece we picked up was a small victory, a reminder of how much work lies ahead. The sight of a cleaner beach invigorated our spirits, prompting discussions about long-term solutions to reduce plastic usage in our daily lives. In addition to cleaning, we distributed educational materials that highlighted simple yet effective ways to minimize plastic consumption, such as using reusable bags and containers. The goal was not just to clean the beach for one day, but to inspire lasting change within the community.
As we concluded the activity, we reflected on the importance of ocean conservation awareness. Events like this mobilize communities and foster environmental responsibility. SWECC’s participation in the beach clean-up was a celebration of our commitment to the planet. As we recognized World Ocean Day, we were reminded of our duty to protect our oceans for future generations. Each piece of plastic removed brought us closer to a healthier, more sustainable environment.
